Diane Churchill

I hear a waterfall outside my studio window. It powered a textile mill, built in the mid nineteenth century, which is now galleries and studio spaces for artists and craftspeople called the Garner Art Center, in Garnerville, NY, near the Hudson River.

The complex of buildings was built from bricks that came over from Europe as ballast on ships. My building was titled the “Endless Steaming” building back in the 1800s, as that was where the textiles were dyed and steamed. The ceilings are hand-hewn trusses, rising to 36 feet in the center.
